SLASHPLAY runs dedicated servers for the original Counter-Strike 1.6, the version the whole series grew from. Deploy one, and your friends join with one click from Steam or by pasting a connect line into the game console. It runs only while you play, and stopping it saves your configs, maps and addons.

What it costs

The CS 1.6 card on the Deploy tab shows 3 tokens an hour. That’s the game’s base rate, set for a 1 CPU, 1 GB server. The sizes you can pick start at SMALL (1 CPU, 2 GB), which works out to 5 tokens an hour for CS 1.6. The deploy window shows the exact price next to every size, and SMALL is plenty for a full 16-player server. See Server sizes.

What you can change

There are no one-click match controls for CS 1.6. You run it the classic way:

  • The Console tab sends server commands, such as changelevel de_inferno or mp_timelimit 30. As you type, it suggests commands from the Counter-Strike list. That list is built for CS2, so not every suggestion exists in 1.6. See CS 1.6 console commands.
  • The file manager (Advanced → Files) gives you the game folder. The cstrike/cfg, cstrike/maps and cstrike/addons folders are part of every save, so custom configs, maps and addons like AMX Mod X survive a stop and restore. Anything else you upload is kept too. See The file manager.
  • A join password keeps strangers out. Turn it on from the General tab. See Join passwords.

Where to start

  1. Start a Counter-Strike 1.6 server: deploy, join, invite friends, stop.
  2. Counter-Strike 1.6 console commands: maps, round settings, bans, custom maps and a server.cfg that sticks.
  3. AMX Mod X on Counter-Strike 1.6: admin commands and plugins, installed by hand.
  4. Start, stop and restore to understand saves and costs.
