AMX Mod X on Counter-Strike 1.6

What AMX Mod X and Metamod are, why CS 1.6 servers use them, and how they fit on SLASHPLAY: upload into cstrike/addons, point the game at Metamod, restart.

FULL GUIDE IN THE WORKS

This covers a tool made by others, not part of SLASHPLAY itself. Here is how it works in words; a step-by-step guide with screenshots is on its way. Stuck? Ask us on Discord.

AMX Mod X is the classic admin and plugin platform for Counter-Strike 1.6. It gives you admin commands and menus tied to Steam IDs, map voting, chat commands, and a huge library of community plugins, from stats and rank systems to gameplay mods and bots. It runs on top of Metamod, a loader that sits between the game engine and Counter-Strike. Both are free community projects, not part of Valve’s game or SLASHPLAY.

How it fits on SLASHPLAY

There’s no one-click installer for CS 1.6, but AMX Mod X and Metamod live in the cstrike/addons folder, and that folder is kept between runs. The general route:

  1. Download the Linux builds of Metamod and AMX Mod X (the base package plus the Counter-Strike add-on) from their official sites.
  2. Upload them into cstrike/addons with the file manager. A .zip or .tar.gz can be uploaded and unpacked with Extract here.
  3. Tell the game to load Metamod. This is done in cstrike/liblist.gam, which is one of SLASHPLAY’s managed game files, outside the kept folders. Take ownership of that one file first (click its padlock), then edit it, so your change survives a stop.
  4. Click Restart server on the General tab.
  5. Add yourself as an admin with your Steam ID in AMX Mod X’s users file, inside cstrike/addons/amxmodx, and restart again.

Extra plugins go into AMX Mod X’s plugins folder and are listed in its plugins file, both inside cstrike/addons/amxmodx.

What’s kept

Everything inside cstrike/addons is part of your save: Metamod, AMX Mod X, its plugins, admins and settings. So are cstrike/cfg, cstrike/maps and cstrike/logs. The owned liblist.gam is kept too. Counter-Strike 1.6 is a frozen legacy build on SLASHPLAY and doesn’t get automatic updates, so a working setup stays working. See What’s kept between runs.

Good to know

  • SLASHPLAY doesn’t review or support third-party plugins. If the server won’t start after a change, the crash box on the server page shows the last output. Giving liblist.gam back (the open padlock, then Give back) returns the game to its standard start, without Metamod, from the next time the server starts after a stop.
  • CS 1.6 has no built-in bots. Bots come from third-party add-ons, usually loaded through Metamod.

A full step-by-step guide is coming. Until then, the CS 1.6 console commands cover what you can do without any add-ons.
