A region is the part of the world your server runs in. It matters because data takes time to travel: the further your players are from the server, the higher their ping. This page explains what’s live today, how to vote for the region you want next, and how to think about ping.

The region live today

Every SLASHPLAY server runs in EU - Germany today, on machines in a German data centre. It’s the only option under Available now in the deploy window, and it’s picked for you when it’s the only one.

Germany sits in the middle of Europe, so players across most of Europe get good ping. Players further away can still join; they’ll just have higher ping.

Available now, and coming soon: pick to vote.

Regions coming soon

The rest of the list, under Coming soon: pick to vote, is where we plan to go next. It has around fifty locations, including:

  • Europe: Frankfurt, Helsinki, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Warsaw, Stockholm, Dublin, Madrid, Milan and more.
  • Americas: US East Coast, US West Coast, US Central, US South, Canada, Mexico City, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Santiago.
  • Asia and Oceania: Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney, Auckland, Mumbai, Jakarta and more.
  • Middle East and Africa: Dubai, Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Cairo, Johannesburg.

Picking one of these doesn’t deploy a server there. It opens a vote form instead.

Vote for your region

We open new regions where players ask for them, and the votes decide the order.

Steps

  1. Open the deploy window for any game (see Deploy a server).
  2. Open the Region list and pick a location under Coming soon: pick to vote. If yours isn’t there, click + My region isn’t listed at the bottom.
  3. The Region not yet live window opens (or Request a region if you picked “isn’t listed”). It explains that we’re rolling out from Germany first and expanding based on player demand.
  4. Fill in the form:
    • Your region / city: only asked when your region isn’t listed, for example Toronto, Canada.
    • What would you use SlashPlay for? (optional): the games you play, how many friends, anything useful.
    • Roughly how much per month? (optional): Prefer not to say, Up to $10, $10–$50, $50–$100 or $100+.
  5. Click Cast vote. You’ll see Thanks! Your vote matters.

Picking a coming-soon region opens a vote, not a deploy.

You get one vote per region. Voting again for the same region updates your earlier vote rather than adding a second one. When other players have already voted for a region, the form shows how many, for example ◆ 12 other players want this region too.

What ping means

Ping (or latency) is how long it takes for a message to get from your computer to the server and back, measured in milliseconds (ms). Lower is better.

PingWhat it feels like
Under 50 msSmooth. Ideal for competitive shooters like CS2.
50 to 100 msFine for most games. You may notice it in fast shooters.
Over 100 msNoticeable delay. Fine for building and survival games, harder in shooters.

Ping depends mostly on physical distance and on your own internet connection. A bigger server size doesn’t lower ping; it helps when the server itself is overloaded, which is a different problem.

Troubleshooting

I picked a region and a form opened instead of deploying. That region isn’t live yet. Cast your vote, then pick EU - Germany to deploy now.

My friends far away have high ping. That’s distance, and there’s no setting that fixes it. Vote for a region near them so we know where to open next.
