Garry's Mod servers on SLASHPLAY

What a SLASHPLAY Garry's Mod server is: Sandbox on gm_construct with 16 slots, one-click Steam joining, addons by hand, from 3 tokens an hour.

SLASHPLAY runs dedicated Garry’s Mod servers, so your group can build and mess around together without anyone hosting from their own PC. Deploy one, and your friends join with one click from Steam. It runs only while you play, and stopping it saves your server config, addons and data.

Addons: what’s there and what isn’t

Be clear on this before you plan a big modded server: SLASHPLAY has no addon installer and no Workshop collection support for Garry’s Mod. The server starts as plain Sandbox on gm_construct.

What you can do is manage the server’s files yourself with the file manager (Advanced → Files):

  • These are part of every save and survive a stop and restore: garrysmod/addons, garrysmod/lua, garrysmod/data, garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg and the ban lists.
  • Anything else you upload, such as a map in garrysmod/maps, is kept with your save too.
  • Addons that add models, materials or maps must also be on each player’s own game (for example by subscribing to the same Workshop items), or they see missing textures and errors.

See Addons and gamemodes for how it works, and ULX on Garry’s Mod for the popular admin mod. Saved files count toward storage, at 1 token per GB per month. See Storage costs.

Other things you can change

  • The Console tab sends server commands, like changelevel gm_flatgrass. It doesn’t suggest commands for Garry’s Mod as you type, so keep the command list handy.
  • A join password from the General tab. See Join passwords.
  • The size, whenever the server is stopped. Big contraptions and lots of props need more CPU: try MEDIUM if the server lags. See Server sizes.

Where to start

  1. Start a Garry’s Mod server: deploy, join, invite friends, stop.
  2. Connecting and inviting for the invite page in detail.
  3. Garry’s Mod console commands: maps, gamemodes, Sandbox limits and a server.cfg that sticks.
  4. Addons and gamemodes when you’re ready to add content.
