How to op someone in Minecraft

Type op Steve in the server console, or /op Steve in chat as an operator, to make Steve a server operator.

op

Makes a player a server operator, with access to commands up to the level set in server.properties.

/op <targets>

Examples

/op Steve

Makes Steve an operator.

op Steve

From the server console, without the slash.

Arguments

targetsRequired
Player name.

What it does

Operators get the permission level from op-permission-level, which is 4 (full access) by default. The player is added to ops.json. Most owners run it from the server console the first time, since no one in game has permission yet.

Good to know

  • Needs operator permission level 3 (admin).
  • Give operator status only to people you trust: level 4 includes stop and world saving.

Run it on your server

On a SLASHPLAY server, type it in the Console tab without the leading slash; in game, operators type it in chat with the slash. New to this? Start a Minecraft server first.
