How to turn off online mode on a Minecraft server

Set online-mode=false in server.properties and restart the server. Accounts are no longer checked with Mojang, so anyone can join under any name.

online-mode

Controls whether players are checked against Mojang's account servers when they join.

online-mode=<value>

Examples

online-mode=true

Verify every player's account.

false Off

Arguments

valueRequired
The value to write after the equals sign.

On SLASHPLAY

Keep it true on SLASHPLAY: with it off, anyone can join under any name, including an operator's.

What it does

With true, only players with a real Minecraft account can join and their names cannot be spoofed. Only turn it off behind a proxy such as Velocity or BungeeCord that does the check itself; otherwise anyone can join under any name, including your op's.

Good to know

  • Changes take effect after a server restart.
  • Turning it off without a proxy lets anyone impersonate any player.

Run it on your server

On a SLASHPLAY server, type it in the Console tab without the leading slash; in game, operators type it in chat with the slash. New to this? Start a Minecraft server first.
