How to simulate packet loss in CS 1.6

Type fakeloss 5 in the server console to drop 5% of incoming packets for testing. Set fakeloss 0 when you are done.

fakeloss

Drops a share of incoming packets on purpose to simulate packet loss. For testing only.

fakeloss <percent>

Examples

fakeloss 5

Drop about 5 percent of packets during a test.

fakeloss 0

Turn it off.

Arguments

percentRequired
Share of packets to drop. 0 turns it off.

What it does

Throws away incoming packets on the machine where it is set, so you can see how the game behaves on a bad connection. On a server it affects every player. Set it back to 0 when you finish testing.

Good to know

  • Never leave this on a public server.

Run it on your server

On a SLASHPLAY server, type it in the Console tab of the server page; the reply shows right under it. A value set there lasts until the server restarts. To keep it, add the line to cstrike/server.cfg. New to this? Start a CS 1.6 server first.
