How to spread players randomly in Minecraft

Type /spreadplayers 0 0 50 500 false @a in chat as an operator to drop every player on a random spot within 500 blocks of 0 0, at least 50 apart.

spreadplayers

Teleports players or entities to random surface spots around a center point, a minimum distance apart.

/spreadplayers <center> <spreadDistance> <maxRange> [under <maxHeight>] <respectTeams> <targets>

Examples

/spreadplayers 0 0 50 500 false @a

Scatters all players within 500 blocks of 0, 0.

/spreadplayers 0 0 200 1000 true @a

Spreads whole teams apart for a team match.

Arguments

centerRequired
X and z coordinates of the center.
spreadDistanceRequired
Minimum distance in blocks between targets.
maxRangeRequired
Maximum distance in blocks from the center, at least 1.
maxHeightOptional
Highest y level to place targets at, after under.
respectTeamsRequired
true keeps teams together, false spreads everyone individually.
targetsRequired
Players or entities to spread.

What it does

Takes a center as x and z, a minimum distance between targets and a maximum range from the center. With respectTeams set to true, team members are placed together. Add under <maxHeight> to keep the search below a height, which is how you use it in the Nether. It is the usual way to start survival games and UHC matches.

Good to know

  • Needs operator permission level 2.
  • Fails if it cannot find enough safe spots, so lower spreadDistance or raise maxRange.

Run it on your server

On a SLASHPLAY server, type it in the Console tab without the leading slash; in game, operators type it in chat with the slash. New to this? Start a Minecraft server first.
