How to turn off autosave in Minecraft

Type save-off in the server console before copying the world folder for a backup, so the files do not change while they copy.

save-off

Turns off automatic world saving, typically while a backup copies the world folder.

/save-off

Examples

save-off

From the console, before starting a backup.

What it does

Stops the server from writing world files, so a backup copy is consistent. Run save-all flush first and save-on afterwards; while saving is off, a crash loses everything since the last save.

Good to know

  • Needs operator permission level 4 (owner), the level op grants by default.

Run it on your server

On a SLASHPLAY server, type it in the Console tab without the leading slash; in game, operators type it in chat with the slash. New to this? Start a Minecraft server first.
