How to change chunk compression on a Minecraft server
Set region-file-compression=lz4 in server.properties and restart the server. Chunks save with faster lz4 compression but use more disk space.
region-file-compression
Sets the compression used when saving chunks to region files: deflate, lz4 or none.
region-file-compression=<algorithm> Examples
region-file-compression=lz4 Faster saving, bigger world files.
Values
| Value | What it does |
|---|---|
| deflateDefault | Smallest files |
| lz4 | Faster, larger files |
| none | No compression |
Arguments
algorithmRequired- The value to write after the equals sign.
What it does
deflate gives the smallest files, lz4 saves faster with larger files, and none skips compression. Only newly written chunks use the new setting.
Good to know
- Changes take effect after a server restart.
Run it on your server
On a SLASHPLAY server, type it in the Console tab without the leading slash; in game, operators type it in chat with the slash. New to this? Start a Minecraft server first.
