How to stop a Minecraft server pausing when empty

Set pause-when-empty-seconds=-1 in server.properties and restart the server. The world keeps ticking, so farms run with nobody online.

pause-when-empty-seconds

Sets how many seconds the server waits with no players online before it pauses the game.

pause-when-empty-seconds=<value>

Examples

pause-when-empty-seconds=60

Pause after one minute without players.

pause-when-empty-seconds=-1

Never pause.

Arguments

valueRequired
The value to write after the equals sign.

What it does

While paused, the world stops ticking: crops, furnaces and farms do not run until a player joins. Set a negative value if you need the world to keep running while empty.

Good to know

  • Changes take effect after a server restart.

Run it on your server

On a SLASHPLAY server, type it in the Console tab without the leading slash; in game, operators type it in chat with the slash. New to this? Start a Minecraft server first.
