How to turn off the wither spawn sound in Minecraft

Run /gamerule global_sound_events false and the wither spawn, end portal and similar sounds are only heard nearby, not by every player.

global_sound_events

Controls whether some boss and world event sounds, like a wither spawning or the end portal opening, are heard by every player.

/gamerule global_sound_events <true|false>

Examples

/gamerule global_sound_events false

Keep event sounds local.

Values

ValueWhat it does
trueDefault On
false Off

Arguments

true|falseOptional
true turns the rule on, false turns it off. Leave it out to show the current value.

What it does

With true, certain event sounds play for everyone in the dimension no matter how far away they are. Turn it off on large servers so one player's wither fight or end portal activation does not play for the whole server.

Run it on your server

On a SLASHPLAY server, type it in the Console tab without the leading slash; in game, operators type it in chat with the slash. New to this? Start a Minecraft server first.
