How to disable the Nether in Minecraft

Run /gamerule allow_entering_nether_using_portals false and nether portals stop taking players to the Nether.

allow_entering_nether_using_portals

Controls whether players can travel to the Nether through nether portals.

/gamerule allow_entering_nether_using_portals <true|false>

Examples

/gamerule allow_entering_nether_using_portals false

Close the Nether to portal travel.

Values

ValueWhat it does
trueDefault On
false Off

Arguments

true|falseOptional
true turns the rule on, false turns it off. Leave it out to show the current value.

What it does

Set it to false to keep players out of the Nether while still letting them build portal frames. Useful for event maps, early game progression on SMP servers, or worlds where the Nether has not been opened yet.

Good to know

  • Replaces the old allow-nether line in server.properties.
  • Takes effect immediately, no restart needed.

Run it on your server

On a SLASHPLAY server, type it in the Console tab without the leading slash; in game, operators type it in chat with the slash. New to this? Start a Minecraft server first.
