How to set an RCON password in CS 1.6

Type rcon_password "k3Yq9vT2mPz8" in the server console, or put it in server.cfg, to allow remote admin with that password. Empty turns RCON off.

rcon_password

Password for remote console access. Empty means RCON is turned off.

rcon_password "<password>"

Examples

rcon_password "k3Yq9vT2mPz8"

Set a long random password.

Arguments

passwordRequired
The RCON password. Empty disables RCON.

On SLASHPLAY

The Console tab refuses it, because the dashboard uses it. Change the RCON password with Edit or Generate on the General tab; on a live server the new one applies at the next restart.

What it does

Anyone who knows this password can run any server command remotely, including changing the map and other settings. Use a long random password and do not share it in chat or screenshots. GoldSrc RCON sends commands in plain text, so treat it as a convenience, not strong security.

Good to know

  • Repeated wrong passwords get an IP banned, see sv_rcon_maxfailures.
  • Tools that send commands over RCON need the same password, so changing it can lock them out.

Run it on your server

On a SLASHPLAY server, type it in the Console tab of the server page; the reply shows right under it. A value set there lasts until the server restarts. To keep it, add the line to cstrike/server.cfg. New to this? Start a CS 1.6 server first.
