How to change render distance on a Minecraft server

Set view-distance=8 in server.properties and restart the server. Players see 8 chunks around them; lower values reduce lag.

view-distance

Sets how many chunks around each player the server sends, which decides how far players can see.

view-distance=<value>

Examples

view-distance=10

Default.

view-distance=8

Less load on a busy server.

Arguments

valueRequired
The value to write after the equals sign.

What it does

Higher values let players see further but use more memory, CPU and bandwidth. A player's own render distance can be lower but not higher than this.

Good to know

  • Changes take effect after a server restart.

Run it on your server

On a SLASHPLAY server, type it in the Console tab without the leading slash; in game, operators type it in chat with the slash. New to this? Start a Minecraft server first.
