How to make a hardcore Minecraft server

Set hardcore=true in server.properties before the world is created. An existing world stays normal, because hardcore is saved in its level.dat.

hardcore

Makes a new world hardcore: one life each, and players who die become spectators.

Arguments

The value to write after the equals sign.

What it does

Hardcore locks difficulty to hard and puts players who die into spectator mode instead of respawning. It only takes effect when the server creates a new world. An existing world keeps the hardcore flag saved in its own level.dat, so turning this on later does not make it hardcore.

Good to know

  • Set it before the world is generated, or start a fresh world after changing it.
  • Turning an existing world into a hardcore world means changing the hardcore value inside its level.dat as well.

Run it on your server

On a SLASHPLAY server, type it in the Console tab without the leading slash; in game, operators type it in chat with the slash. New to this? Start a Minecraft server first.
