How to give yourself effects in Minecraft

Type /effect give @a minecraft:speed 60 1 in chat as an operator to give everyone Speed II for 60 seconds. /effect clear removes effects.

effect

Gives or clears status effects like speed, night vision or regeneration, with a duration in seconds and a level.

/effect give <targets> <effect> [<seconds>|infinite] [<amplifier>] [<hideParticles>]

Examples

/effect give @a minecraft:speed 60 1

Speed II for every player for one minute.

/effect give @p minecraft:night_vision infinite 0 true

Permanent night vision without particles.

/effect clear @a

Removes all effects from everyone.

Arguments

targetsRequired
Players or entities, such as @a or @e[type=minecraft:zombie].
effectRequired
Effect ID, for example minecraft:speed or minecraft:night_vision.
secondsOptional
Duration in seconds, or infinite. Defaults to 30 seconds.
amplifierOptional
Effect level minus one: 0 is level I, 1 is level II.
hideParticlesOptional
true hides the effect particles.

What it does

effect give applies an effect for a number of seconds (1 to 1000000) or infinite, at an amplifier from 0 to 255, where 0 is level I. Set hideParticles to true to hide the swirl particles. effect clear removes one effect or all of them; with no target it clears your own effects. It works on mobs too, not only players.

Good to know

  • Needs operator permission level 2.
  • Use /effect clear <targets> <effect> to remove just one effect.

Run it on your server

On a SLASHPLAY server, type it in the Console tab without the leading slash; in game, operators type it in chat with the slash. New to this? Start a Minecraft server first.
