How to summon a mob in Minecraft

Type /summon minecraft:zombie in chat as an operator to spawn a zombie where you stand, or /summon minecraft:lightning_bolt for lightning.

summon

Spawns any entity, from mobs and armor stands to lightning bolts, at a position with optional NBT data.

/summon <entity> [<pos>] [<nbt>]

Examples

/summon minecraft:zombie

Spawns a zombie where you stand.

/summon minecraft:lightning_bolt ~ ~ ~

Strikes lightning at your position.

/summon minecraft:villager ~ ~ ~ {NoAI:1b,PersistenceRequired:1b}

A villager that stands still and never despawns.

Arguments

entityRequired
Entity type ID, for example minecraft:zombie.
posOptional
Where to spawn it. Defaults to the current position.
nbtOptional
Entity data in { }.

What it does

Without a position it spawns the entity where the command runs. Add an NBT compound to set data like NoAI:1b, custom names or equipment. Some entities cannot be summoned, and spawning many with data can lag the server.

Good to know

  • Needs operator permission level 2.

Run it on your server

On a SLASHPLAY server, type it in the Console tab without the leading slash; in game, operators type it in chat with the slash. New to this? Start a Minecraft server first.
