How to change gamemode in GMod

Type gamemode terrortown in the server console, then change the map: the new gamemode loads on the next map. At launch, use +gamemode sandbox.

gamemode

Sets which gamemode the server runs, using the gamemode's folder name such as sandbox or terrortown.

gamemode <folder name>

Examples

gamemode terrortown

Switch to Trouble in Terrorist Town, then change map to load it.

+gamemode sandbox +map gm_construct

Launch command line form.

Arguments

folder nameRequired
Gamemode folder name, for example sandbox, terrortown, murder or darkrp.

What it does

Holds the name of the active gamemode folder from garrysmod/gamemodes or a Workshop addon. Changing it does not switch gamemode on the spot: the new gamemode loads on the next map change. Most servers set it on the launch command line with +gamemode so it is right from the first map.

The game's own description: The current gamemode

Good to know

  • Use the folder name, not the display name shown in the server browser.
  • Follow it with changelevel or map to apply it.

Run it on your server

On a SLASHPLAY server, type it in the Console tab of the server page; the reply shows right under it. A value set there lasts until the server restarts. To keep it, add the line to garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg. New to this? Start a GMod server first.
