How to load a map in GMod

Type map gm_construct in the server console to start that map fresh, with the gamemode reloaded from scratch, for example after a gamemode change.

map

Loads a map and starts a fresh server session on it, reloading the gamemode from scratch.

map <mapname>

Examples

map gm_construct

Load the default Sandbox map.

map ttt_minecraft_b5

Load a TTT map (it must be installed or in your Workshop collection).

Arguments

mapnameRequired
Map file name without the .bsp extension.

What it does

Starts the given map as if the server had just booted, fully restarting the server session. Use it to load the first map or to force a full reload after changing the gamemode or Lua files. For a normal map switch, changelevel keeps players connected and is smoother.

The game's own description: Start playing on specified map.

Good to know

  • The map must exist in garrysmod/maps or a mounted addon.

Run it on your server

On a SLASHPLAY server, type it in the Console tab of the server page; the reply shows right under it. A value set there lasts until the server restarts. To keep it, add the line to garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg. New to this? Start a GMod server first.
