How to set your network rate in TF2

Type rate 196608 in your game console to accept more data per second and avoid choke in busy fights. The server's sv_maxrate can cap it.

rate

Sets the most data per second your game will accept from the server, in bytes.

rate <bytes>

Examples

rate 196608

A common high value for a good connection.

Arguments

bytesRequired
Bytes per second.

What it does

If it is too low, you see choke on net_graph in busy fights. Most players use a high value on a decent connection. The server can cap it with sv_maxrate.

The game's own description: Max bytes/sec the host can receive data

Use it in your game

Type it in your own game console: turn on the developer console in the game's settings, then press the key under Esc. To keep it, put the line in tf/cfg/autoexec.cfg.
