How to set your rate to fix choke in CS:S

Type rate 100000 in your game console to accept up to 100000 bytes a second, which stops choke on busy servers.

rate

Sets the maximum data in bytes per second you accept from the server.

rate <bytes>

Examples

rate 100000

High rate for good connections.

rate 30000

A common value.

Arguments

bytesRequired
Bytes per second.

What it does

Too low and you get choke on busy servers. Most players on modern connections use high values such as 30000 or more. The server clamps it between sv_minrate and sv_maxrate.

The game's own description: Max bytes/sec the host can receive data

Use it in your game

Type it in your own game console: turn on the developer console in the game's settings, then press the key under Esc. To keep it, put the line in cstrike/cfg/autoexec.cfg.
