How to change class with a command in TF2

Type join_class medic in your game console to switch to Medic without the class menu. Bind it to a key for quick swaps.

join_class

Switches you to a class by name without opening the class menu.

join_class <class>

Examples

join_class medic

Switch to Medic.

bind F5 "join_class heavyweapons"

Bind a key that switches to Heavy.

Arguments

classRequired
scout, soldier, pyro, demoman, heavyweapons, engineer, medic, sniper, spy or random.

What it does

Picks your class for your next spawn. If you are outside the spawn room, hud_classautokill decides whether you die right away to respawn as the new class. Common in class-switch binds.

The game's own description: Send a joinclass command

Good to know

  • Heavy is heavyweapons, not heavy.

Use it in your game

Type it in your own game console: turn on the developer console in the game's settings, then press the key under Esc. To keep it, put the line in tf/cfg/autoexec.cfg.
